Why it stepped back
OpenAI ended Instant Checkout on 24 March 2026, choosing to send shoppers to merchants’ own checkout and retailer apps instead. Discovery inside ChatGPT continues.3
The newest entrant
Muse can browse, choose and check out, but asks for approval before paying. Shopify’s deal brings Shop Pay checkout across Shopify stores; Amazon has blocked Muse.4
PayPal powered
Instant Buy launched with PayPal in November 2025 for US users. Merchants that are not compatible are still shown, but shoppers finish on their site.5
A walled garden
Amazon lets its own assistant buy on Amazon and blocks outside agents. Walmart has reportedly opened a gateway for other agents.1

Shopify, PayPal and Stripe each have agentic commerce settings or programmes. Find out what is already on for your store.
Make product data agent-ready
Accurate price, stock, shipping, returns and identifiers. Agents skip what they cannot verify.
Track AI orders separately
Tag AI-referred visits and orders so you can see which assistant sells for you. Set up AI tracking in GA4.
Outside the US? Prepare anyway
Most AI checkouts are US-first, but discovery is global. Clean product data helps you in AI answers everywhere today.
You will not choose which AI your customers use. You can make sure every one of them can read your store.

Can ChatGPT buy products for shoppers?
Not inside the chat any more. OpenAI ended Instant Checkout in March 2026. ChatGPT still recommends products, then sends shoppers to the merchant’s own checkout or a retailer app inside ChatGPT.
Which AI assistants can check out inside the chat?
As of October 2026, reports list Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta’s Muse and Perplexity as able to complete purchases inside the conversation, mostly for US shoppers.
How do merchants get into AI checkout?
