- Shoppers can add products from different retailers to one Google cart, then get alerts on deals and price drops.
- Checkout happens on Google (Google Pay) or by handing the cart to your website. Either way, you stay the merchant of record.
- It runs on Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), switched on in Merchant Center’s UCP hub, rolling out gradually in the US first.
- Everywhere else, the lesson is the same: the cart reads your price, stock and shipping data from your feed. Clean feeds win.
Checked 24 October 2026. Universal Cart is new and Google is still rolling it out. Some details below come from merchant guides and trade press rather than Google’s own documentation, and are marked as reported. Check Merchant Center for what your account can switch on.
01What Universal Cart does
Until now, shopping on Google ended with a click to a store. Universal Cart keeps the basket on Google. A shopper can add a jacket from one retailer, shoes from another and a bag from a third, wherever they find them in Search, AI Mode or the Gemini app.12
Illustration. Layout and labels on Google differ.
One basket, many stores
Items from different retailers sit together. The shopper compares, removes and decides in one place, without opening your site.
Deals and price drops
While items wait in the cart, Google monitors them for deals and price changes and alerts the shopper. Reports also mention restock alerts and promo codes.3
Checkout on Google
Where supported, shoppers pay with Google Pay without leaving Google. The order is still yours: you are the merchant of record.
Or continue on your site
Merchants can instead receive the whole cart on their own site, where the shopper finishes checkout as usual.
02How a cart reaches your store
Universal Cart is built on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Google’s open standard that lets AI agents and shopping surfaces talk to merchants’ systems. Merchants choose what to switch on in the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center.4

Cart transfer to your site
| Capability | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Cart transfer | Sends the shopper’s cart to your site to finish checkout. The first release is one-way: no syncing back. | Stores with custom checkout, upsells or loyalty sign-in |
| Native checkout | Shopper pays on Google; the order arrives in your system. A separate API; not needed for cart transfer. | Simple catalogues, mobile-heavy shoppers |
| Identity linking | Connects the shopper’s account with yours, for saved details and loyalty. | Brands with strong member programmes |
Approved merchants get a sandbox to test their UCP profile, cart transfer and checkout before going live, and access is phased through a waitlist and early access.5
03Who can use it, and when
Reported launch partners include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants.2 Google previewed YouTube and Gmail as future places to add items, but they were not part of the October launch.6
Not in the US? You cannot switch Universal Cart on yet, but the same feed data already decides whether your products show in Shopping ads, free listings and AI Mode answers in your market. Fixing it now pays twice. See how AI shopping agents choose products.
Is your product feed ready for carts on Google?
Tick what is true for your Merchant Center feed today. The score shows which gaps to fix first.
Runs in your browser; nothing is saved. Weights reflect what a cart reads first (price, stock, shipping), not an official Google score.
04What to do before Black Friday
Fix price and availability mismatches. A cart that shows the wrong price at checkout loses the sale and can get products disapproved.
Complete shipping, returns and GTINs. These fill the details a shopper compares when your product sits next to a competitor’s.
Submit Black Friday promotions and sale prices with start and end dates, so price-drop alerts fire for your products.
Check the UCP hub in Merchant Center. If cart transfer is available, test it in the sandbox: it keeps checkout, upsells and data on your site.
When the basket lives on Google, your product feed is your shop window, price tag and stock room at once.

Common questions
What is Google Universal Cart?
Universal Cart is a shopping cart in Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app that holds products from many retailers at once. It launched in the US on 15 October 2026. Google monitors items for deals and price drops, and shoppers can check out on Google or continue on the retailer’s site.
Who is the merchant of record with Universal Cart?
The retailer. Whether the shopper pays on Google with Google Pay or finishes on the retailer’s website, the brand remains the merchant of record and fulfils the order.
How do merchants join Universal Cart?
US merchants enable capabilities in the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center: cart transfer to their own site, native checkout on Google, and identity linking. The hub is rolling out gradually, with access through a waitlist and early access.
Is Universal Cart available outside the US?
Not yet. Google says Canada and Australia are next, from next year. No date has been announced for the UK, Europe or the GCC, but the same product feed data already powers Shopping ads and AI Mode results there.
