- Status ads appear between Status updates in the Updates tab; Promoted Channels appear in Channel discovery. Chats stay encrypted and ad-free.
- They are bought in Meta Ads Manager as a placement, with WhatsApp chat, your site or a Channel as the destination.
- Availability is still phased: some markets, objectives and destinations are not live for every account.
- The format is full-screen, sound-off by default and skippable with one tap. Creative built for feeds will fail here.
Checked 28 October 2026. WhatsApp announced global availability in February 2026, but Meta’s later disclosures and its product page still describe a phased rollout by market, account and destination type. Video length limits for ads differ between guides; check the limit shown in Ads Manager for your account. Some EU users can pay for an ad-free Updates tab.
01What the placement is
Two things arrived together: ads in Status, shown as full-screen stories between the updates people already watch, and Promoted Channels, which surface a Channel in the directory. Both live only in the Updates tab. There is no separate WhatsApp ad console: you pick WhatsApp Status as a placement in Meta Ads Manager, upload a 9:16 creative, set audience and budget, and launch.12

Animation. The sponsored story sits in the same sequence as friends’ updates, with the same tap-to-skip behaviour.
02How it behaves
| Behaviour | WhatsApp Status | Instagram Stories / Reels |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Full-screen 9:16, between friends’ updates | Full-screen 9:16, between creators and friends |
| Sound | Often off; captions essential | Often on for Reels, off for Stories |
| Skip | One tap forward | One tap or swipe |
| Destination | WhatsApp chat, website, or a Channel | Website, app, chat, profile |
| Mindset | Checking on people they know | Browsing entertainment |
| Buying | Meta Ads Manager placement; auction pricing | Meta Ads Manager; auction pricing |
The mindset row matters most. People open Status to see friends and family. An ad that feels like a shop window interrupts; an ad that feels like a message from someone they know gets a reply. Chat as the destination fits that mood. See what a WhatsApp reply now costs before you route everyone into chat.
03Creative rules
Respect the overlays
The interface covers roughly the top and bottom of the frame: progress bars and name on top, reply bar and CTA at the bottom. Keep logo, headline and offer in the middle.
Win the first second
The thumb is already on the screen. Open with the product or the offer, not a logo animation.
Design for silence
Captions or on-screen text carry the message. Sound is a bonus, not the plan.
Look like a Status
Handheld, vertical, a person talking: it reads as an update, not an ad. Polished horizontal cut-downs read as intrusion.
Short, then shorter
Guides cite up to 30 seconds for ads; the ones that finish are far shorter. Say it in 6–10 seconds.
One clear next step
“Chat on WhatsApp” with a prepared first message converts better than a vague “Learn more”.
Will your creative survive the Status interface?
Describe your 9:16 creative. The checker draws the covered areas on a phone, places your elements, and flags anything the interface would hide.
Runs in your browser; nothing is saved. Overlay areas are approximate and vary by device; preview the real ad in Ads Manager before launch.
04A first test
Check availability
In Ads Manager, create a campaign and look for WhatsApp Status under placements. If it is missing, your market or objective is not live yet.
Start with chat as the destination
Use a click-to-WhatsApp objective with a prepared first message, so the reply starts the conversation for the customer.
Make two native creatives
One person-to-camera, one product-first, both vertical, captioned, under 10 seconds. Test them against each other, not against your Reels ad.
Judge by conversations, not views
Count started chats, replies within an hour and orders. A cheap view that nobody answers is not a result.
Status is where people check on the people they care about. Earn your place in that list.

Common questions
Does WhatsApp show ads now?
Yes, only in the Updates tab. Since February 2026 WhatsApp has rolled out ads between Status updates and Promoted Channels worldwide, with availability still phased by market and account. Personal chats and calls remain end-to-end encrypted and ad-free.
How do I buy WhatsApp Status ads?
Through Meta Ads Manager. Select WhatsApp Status as a placement, upload a vertical 9:16 creative, set your audience and budget, and choose a destination such as a WhatsApp chat, your website or a Channel. There is no separate WhatsApp ad console.
What size should a WhatsApp Status ad be?
Full-screen vertical 9:16, with 1080 × 1920 pixels recommended, as an image (JPG/PNG) or video (MP4/MOV). Keep key elements in the middle of the frame, away from the interface at the top and bottom.
How much do WhatsApp Status ads cost?
There is no published rate. Status ads and Promoted Channels are auction inventory priced like other Meta placements, depending on audience, competition and objective.
