- Positioning is a choice, not a slogan. It decides who you are for, what you are best at and what you will not do.
- Generic claims are invisible. Quality, trust and good prices are expected, not chosen.
- Specific beats broad. Being the obvious choice for a few is worth more than being one option for everyone.
- Proof makes it real. A position without evidence is just an adjective.
Drive down any commercial street in Muscat and read the signs. Most promise the same things in the same words. Open their Instagram pages and it continues: the same stock photos, the same “best in Oman”, the same discount posts. When everyone sounds alike, customers choose on the only thing left to compare: price.
Positioning is how you escape that. It is not a logo, a colour or a clever tagline. It is a clear answer to one question your customer is silently asking: why you, and not the shop next door?
01What positioning really is
A good position answers four questions in plain words. If you can’t answer one of them, that is where your marketing is weakest.
Who is it for?
Not “everyone”. The specific customer you serve best: busy families in Seeb, construction firms in Duqm, brides planning a wedding.
What problem do you solve?
In their words, not yours. “I never know if the technician will actually come” is a problem. “Facility management solutions” is not.
What makes you different?
Something real that a competitor can’t easily claim: a method, a speed, a specialism, a guarantee, an origin.
Why should they believe it?
Reviews, numbers you can show, certifications, years in a niche, a guarantee you honour, well-known clients.
02Six angles that work in Oman
You don’t need to invent something nobody has ever done. You need to pick an angle and own it consistently. These are the most reliable for small and growing businesses here.
Notice what is missing: “cheapest”. Price can be a position, but it is the hardest to defend. Someone can always undercut you, and then you have nothing left.
03Write your positioning statement
This is an internal sentence, not an advertisement. It keeps your team, designer and agency aligned. Fill in the blanks honestly:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| “We provide high-quality interior design services at competitive prices.” | “For young Omani couples furnishing their first home, we design complete apartments in three weeks on a fixed budget, because we work from our own furniture catalogue.” |
| “Your trusted partner for IT solutions.” | “For clinics in Muscat that can’t afford downtime, we keep systems running with a two-hour response promise, backed by 30 clinic clients.” |
| “Delicious food made with love.” | “For office teams in Al Khuwair who want a proper lunch, we deliver hot Omani home-style meals by 12:30, cooked that morning.” |
04Using it everywhere
A position only works if customers meet it again and again. Once you have your statement, check each of these touchpoints and ask whether they say the same thing:
“Positioning is mostly about what you are brave enough to leave out.”
Questions
What is brand positioning in simple terms?
It is the clear reason a specific customer should choose you over the alternatives: who you are for, what problem you solve, how you are different and why they should believe it.
Won’t focusing on a niche lose me customers?
Usually the opposite. A clear focus makes you easier to remember and recommend. People outside your niche still buy from you; you are simply the obvious choice for your core group.
How is positioning different from a slogan?
Positioning is the strategic decision. A slogan is one way of expressing it. Many strong businesses have a clear position and no slogan at all.
How often should I change my positioning?
Rarely. Consistency is what makes it stick. Revisit it when your market changes significantly or when you expand into a very different customer group.
