Word of Mouth Is a System,
Not Luck

Most businesses in Oman say their best customers come from recommendations. Very few design for it. Here is how referrals really work, what to reward, and how to turn “who do you use?” into a repeatable growth channel.

Aunt MaryamAnyone know a good AC technician in Seeb? Ours stopped again 😩

KhalidWe used someone last summer, he was ok. Can’t find his number

SalmaUse CoolFix! They came the same day and sent a video of the problem before fixing. Here’s the number 👇

Aunt MaryamCalled them. Coming at 4. Thank you habibti 🙏

Twenty minutes, one decision, zero ads. (CoolFix is an invented name; the pattern is real.) Notice what won the job. Not the cheapest price and not the best Instagram. Salma remembered one specific thing the company did, a video of the problem, and she had the number saved. Khalid’s technician was “ok”, and “ok” doesn’t get shared.

Word of mouth isn’t something that happens to you. It is the output of a system: a remarkable moment, an easy way to share and a reason to do it now.

Why referred customers are worth more

Recommendations don’t just bring more customers; they tend to bring better ones. A friend has already explained what you do, set expectations and vouched for you. That shows up in the numbers.

~18%

lower churn among referred customers in a large study of a European bank’s referral programme (Schmitt, Skiera & Van den Bulte).

~16%

higher long-term value for those referred customers in the same study, comfortably more than the reward the bank paid.

Nielsen’s global trust surveys have repeatedly found that recommendations from people we know are the most trusted form of advertising. In Oman, where decisions are often discussed in the family, the majlis, the office and a dozen WhatsApp groups, that trust is concentrated even further.

Why people recommend (and why they don’t)

Jonah Berger’s research on what makes things spread, summarised in his book Contagious, points to a few reliable triggers. Here they are, translated for Oman:

1

It makes them look good

People share things that make them seem knowledgeable or generous. “I know a place” is social currency.

2

Something reminds them

Summer reminds people of AC repair, Ramadan of catering, school season of uniforms. Tie your ask to those moments.

3

It moved them

Surprise, delight or relief gets shared. Being merely satisfactory doesn’t.

4

It is visible

Branded bags, a distinctive cup, a clever receipt, a plaque on a finished project: things other people can see and ask about.

5

It is useful

A tip that saves money or time is easy to pass on, like a clinic that sends clear prices before booking.

6

There is a story

“They sent a video of the problem first” is a story. “Good service” isn’t. Give people a sentence to repeat.

The most common reason people don’t recommend is simpler: they forget, or they don’t have your number or link to hand when the question comes up. That part is fixable.

The referral loop in five steps

  1. Earn itFind your “video of the problem”: one specific, memorable thing you do that competitors don’t. Without it, a referral programme just pays people to recommend something ordinary.
  2. Ask at the peakAsk right after the moment of delight: a successful delivery, a first result, a compliment in chat. Not in a random monthly email.
  3. Make it one tapGive people a ready-made WhatsApp message with your link or number, so sharing takes seconds. A personal code or link also lets you track it.
  4. Reward both sides, gracefullyGive the new customer a welcome and the referrer a thank-you. More on what works in Oman below.
  5. Close the loopTell the referrer when their friend becomes a customer, and thank them personally. It is the step most businesses skip, and the one that makes people refer again.
Example share messageSalam! This is the AC company I told you about. They came the same day and showed us the problem on video first. Use my code SALMA10 for 10% off the first visit: [link]

What to reward in Oman

Research by Ryu and Feick found that rewards make people more likely to recommend, especially to acquaintances rather than close friends, and especially for brands that are less well known. So a reward can help a young business more than an established one.

But how the reward feels matters. In Oman, getting paid cash for recommending your cousin can feel transactional, even awkward. Some patterns that tend to work better:

  • Give the friend the bigger half. “Your friend gets 5 rial off” feels like a gift from the referrer. It also does the conversion work.
  • Thank the referrer in kind. Store credit, a free service, an upgrade or priority booking feels like hospitality, not commission.
  • Offer a giving option. Letting the referrer donate their reward to a registered charity suits people who would never accept money for a recommendation.
  • Surprise sometimes. An unexpected thank-you gift to your top referrers can mean more than a fixed rule.
  • For B2B, keep it professional. A finder’s fee should be transparent and allowed by both companies’ policies. Often a thank-you lunch and a return referral matter more.
REFERRAL REWARD CALCULATOR

How much can you afford to give?

Enter your numbers. The calculator suggests a reward that is still cheaper than buying the customer through ads.

Runs in your browser; nothing is saved. Rule of thumb: spend up to 60% of your ad cost per customer, capped at 30% of first-year gross profit, split 60/40 in the friend’s favour.

Referral ideas by business type

Starting points to adapt, not rules
BusinessWhen to askWhat to offer
Dental or beauty clinicAfter a visible result, when the client says thank youFriend: free consultation. Referrer: credit on the next treatment.
Café or restaurantWhen a regular brings someone newA “bring a friend” card: both get a free dessert on the next visit.
Gym or academyAfter the first month, when habits have formedFriend: free first week. Referrer: an extra week added.
Online storeOn the delivery confirmation and in the thank-you WhatsAppFriend: OMR off the first order. Referrer: store credit.
Home servicesRight after the job, while the relief is freshA sticker with your number on the unit, plus a discount on the next service.
B2B servicesAfter a delivered result or a renewalAn introduction swap, a case study feature, or a transparent finder’s fee.

Measure it, or it stays a feeling

  • Ask every new customer “How did you hear about us?”, with “A friend or family member” as an option, and a box for their name.
  • Use personal codes or links so you know who referred whom. A simple spreadsheet is enough to start.
  • Track referrals per 100 customers each month. It is the clearest sign of whether your experience is getting more or less shareable.
  • Compare value, not just volume. Check whether referred customers reorder more, as the research suggests. If they do, you can afford a bigger reward.

Traps to avoid

Paying for reviews. Rewarding people for Google reviews breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed. Keep referral rewards and review requests completely separate.

Rewarding before the purchase. Pay out only when the friend actually buys, or you will reward fake sign-ups.

Complicated rules. If it takes more than one sentence to explain, people won’t use it.

Forgetting to pay. A promised reward that never arrives turns your best advocate into a critic.

Referral before remarkable. A programme can amplify a great experience. It can’t create one.

Common questions

Should the reward be a discount or cash?

For most consumer businesses in Oman, credit or a free service feels more natural than cash and costs you less, because it is valued at the price, not the cost. Test both if you are unsure.

How big should the reward be?

Big enough to feel like a real thank-you, small enough to stay cheaper than your ads. The calculator above gives a starting point; then watch whether the number of referrals changes when you change it.

We are a new business. Is it too early?

No. Rewards help less-known brands most. Start with a simple two-sided offer and ask your first happy customers personally.

Can I run referrals through WhatsApp?

Yes, and it is often the easiest channel in Oman. Send a thank-you message after the purchase with a ready-to-forward text and a personal code.
