A café in Al Khuwair runs Instagram ads for three months. Followers go up by 4,000. The owner is pleased. But when we open Search Console, the number of people searching for the café’s name each month hasn’t moved.
The ads were reaching people. They weren’t making anyone remember.
That gap is what this article is about. Likes, reach and followers tell you whether people saw you. Branded search, people searching your business by name, tells you whether they remembered you and cared enough to look you up. It is hard to fake, it links directly to sales, and in 2026 it matters more than ever. The café is a composite teaching example, not a specific client.
Why your name matters more in the AI era
Search has changed. Google shows AI Overviews on many queries, ChatGPT and other assistants answer questions directly, and a growing share of searches end without a click. For generic questions like “best café in Muscat”, you are now competing with an AI summary as well as ten other businesses.
But when someone searches your name, there is no contest. They want you. Branded searches convert far better than generic ones, they are cheap or free to win, and they are a strong sign to search engines and AI systems that your business is a real, known entity worth recommending. For the other side of this shift, see the zero-click SEO strategy.
People see you but don’t remember you. Creative is forgettable, or the name never appears clearly.
People look you up and something stops them: poor reviews, a weak website, no prices, slow replies.
Your marketing is building memory, and the path from search to purchase works. Protect it.
How to find your branded search numbers
You need Google Search Console connected to your website. It’s free, and if you don’t have it, set it up today. Then:
Open Performance → Search results and set the date range to the last 16 months, so you can see seasons like Ramadan and National Day.
Filter to branded queries. Search Console now offers a branded-queries filter on many properties. If yours doesn’t, add a query filter using “Custom (regex)” with your name and its common spellings, for example al ?noor|al ?nour|النور.
Include Arabic and misspellings. In Oman people search in both languages and in transliteration. A brand spelled “Al Noor” is also searched as “alnoor”, “al nour” and “النور”.
Compare with non-branded. Switch the filter to “doesn’t match regex” to see everything else. The ratio between the two tells a story.
Also look at Google Trends for Oman to compare your name’s interest with competitors’, and at the “search” line in your Google Business Profile performance report, which shows how many people found your listing by searching your name.
What does your search mix say?
Enter the clicks from Search Console for the last 3 months, and the same 3 months a year earlier if you have them.
Runs in your browser; nothing is saved. The readings are rules of thumb, not industry benchmarks.
Reading the mix
| Branded share | Usually means | Where to focus |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15% | Your site is found for topics, not for you. Common with content-heavy blogs and new brands. | Brand memory: a clear name in every ad, consistent visuals, local PR. |
| 15–50% | A healthy mix of discovery and demand. | Keep both growing; watch the year-on-year trend. |
| Over 50% | People know you, but you rely on existing demand. Common with established local shops. | New audiences through non-branded SEO and prospecting ads. |
The trend matters more than the level. Branded clicks growing year on year, outside of your seasonal peaks, is one of the clearest signs that your marketing is compounding.
What pushes branded search up
Say the name, show the name
Ads where the brand appears only in the last second, or where the logo is tiny, build little memory. Put the name early, on screen and spoken, especially in video.
Make it easy to spell
If your name is hard to spell in English or Arabic, people search for a guess and find someone else. Choose one spelling and repeat it everywhere, including the handle.
Be seen offline
Signage, packaging, events, radio, sponsorships and word of mouth drive many searches in Oman. People see a shop front on Sultan Qaboos Street and look it up later.
Earn mentions
Local news coverage, community groups, creators and reviews all send people to search your name. Mentions in trusted sources also help AI assistants recognise you.
Be distinctive
A consistent colour, sound, character or phrase makes people remember who the ad was for. Generic stock-style content is forgotten fast.
Give people a reason to look you up
A limited offer, a price list, a menu, a booking link. “Search us on Google” works when there is something worth finding.
Win the search when it happens
Getting people to search your name is half the job. The other half is making sure what they find turns them into customers. Search your own brand name on a phone, in both languages, and check it as a stranger would.
- Your website ranks first, with a clear title and description, not a random inner page.
- Your Google Business Profile shows with correct hours, photos, phone and a recent reply to reviews. See the Business Profile guide.
- Reviews are recent and answered. A 4.6 with owner replies beats a silent 4.9.
- Competitors aren’t bidding on your name above you. If they are, a small brand campaign in Google Ads protects you cheaply.
- No old or wrong listings with outdated numbers or closed branches.
- AI assistants describe you correctly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude “what is [your brand] in Muscat?” and fix the sources behind any wrong answer.
Make it a monthly number
Add branded search to the short list of numbers you look at every month, next to leads and sales. When you launch a campaign, watch whether branded search moves in the weeks after. If it doesn’t, the campaign might be buying clicks without building a brand, like the café in the opening story.
For a simple way to put this on one screen, see the GA4 dashboard for CEOs.
Common questions
Should I run Google Ads on my own brand name?
If competitors or resellers bid on your name, yes; it is usually cheap and protects the click. If nobody else appears, test pausing it and watch whether total branded clicks hold.
My branded search is tiny. Is that bad?
Not for a new business. What matters is the direction. Pick a baseline now and watch it quarter by quarter.
Does social media increase branded search?
It can, if the content is memorable and the name is clear. Watch for spikes in branded search after big posts or campaigns.
