- Custom Feeds let viewers build homepage tabs from a prompt. Started as a one-feed test in May; now spreading in the US, with 3 saved feeds (8 for Premium).
- Ask YouTube is gaining comment summaries, spec comparison tables and frame-level video search, ending in a tap to a retailer’s cart. Previewed, not launched.
- Prompt feeds reward videos that say what they are: format, length, mood and topic in the title and description.
- YouTube is betting on brand deals and affiliates as the creator economy’s next engine. Brands get a new path into viewer-requested feeds.
Checked 28 October 2026. Custom Feeds availability is reported as US-first and still expanding; reports differ on timing. Ask YouTube’s shopping features were demonstrated, with ranking rules undisclosed, and YouTube is not part of Google’s Universal Cart launch. Treat the shopping path as previewed.
01How Custom Feeds work
A viewer types a request. YouTube turns it into a populated tab on the homepage and keeps it. Neal Mohan’s own example was a feed of long documentaries for the evening. It steers recommendations rather than replacing the algorithm, and viewers can save several feeds.12
Animation. Videos whose titles say what they are rise into the requested feed.
02Ask YouTube goes shopping
Spec tables from videos
Ask YouTube will build comparison tables for products reviewed across videos. Which ones it picks, and how it ranks rivals, is not disclosed.
Comments, condensed
Comment summaries surface what viewers actually said about a product. Your community’s verdict becomes part of the answer.
Search inside the frame
Frame-level search can find the moment a product appears. Clear shots and spoken product names become searchable.
Tap to a retailer’s cart
The demo ended with a tap to a merchant site and an item in the cart. Not yet part of Universal Cart; fees and ranking unknown.
Around it, the shopping machinery keeps growing: affiliate programmes in 35 countries, YouTube Shopping launching in the Netherlands via bol.com in October, and brand partnership tools inside Studio.34
Do your titles say what the video is?
Paste up to ten titles, one per line. The tester checks each for the cues a typed request would match: topic, format, length or depth, and audience. It is a heuristic, not YouTube’s ranking.
Runs in your browser; nothing is saved. Rules: a clear topic, a format word (documentary, tutorial, review…), a length or depth cue (full, 20 minutes, beginner), and no bait phrases.
03What it means for brands
| Lever | Algorithmic feed | Prompted feed |
|---|---|---|
| What gets you in | Watch-time signals and similar-viewer behaviour | Matching the request: topic, format, mood, length |
| Title job | Earn the click | Describe the video accurately enough to be requested |
| Creator partnerships | Reach the creator’s audience | Appear in feeds built around the creator’s genre |
| Products | Shopping tags and ads | Ask YouTube answers, comparisons and cart hand-offs |
Brands that produce useful long-form content (guides, documentaries, how-tos) gain a route into feeds people deliberately asked for. Brands that only run short ads do not. Creator deals matter more: Mohan is explicit that brand partnerships are the growth engine.
04What to do now
Rewrite titles to be requestable
Topic + format + length cue. “Full tour: 40-minute walkthrough of a Muscat villa” beats “You have to see this”.
Make products visible and named
Show the product clearly, say its name on camera, and list it in the description. Frame search and comparisons depend on it.
Mine your comments
Comment summaries will quote your viewers. Answer questions in the comments and pin the useful ones.
Build one series for a mood
Feeds are built around moods and formats. A consistent series (“10-minute morning routines”) is easier to request than one-offs.
For a decade, titles were written to win a click. Now they are written to answer a request.

Common questions
What are YouTube Custom Feeds?
Custom Feeds let viewers type a request and get a homepage tab built from it, such as long documentaries for the evening. Announced at Made on YouTube on 23 September 2026 after a May test, it is rolling out in the US first. Reports say free accounts can save three feeds and Premium subscribers eight.
Can people shop through Ask YouTube?
Not yet at scale. YouTube previewed Ask YouTube features that compare product specs, summarise comments and search inside video frames, with a demo ending in a tap to a retailer’s cart. Ranking rules and fees are undisclosed, and YouTube is not part of Google’s Universal Cart launch.
How do I get my videos into a Custom Feed?
There is no opt-in. Feeds are built from requests, so videos whose titles and descriptions clearly state the topic, format, length and mood are easier to match. Consistent series built around a format or mood help.
Does Custom Feeds replace the YouTube algorithm?
No. Coverage says it steers recommendations within a saved feed rather than replacing the recommendation system behind the main homepage.
